Since we stopped going outside, I hadn’t had a proper haircut for months. Luckily, I knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy on the dark web who could do clandestine styling. My details were sent on to Ivan, who messaged me to say that he had six haircuts’ worth of experience and an immunity certificate proving that he had already had the virus.

We met at 5am on the dry bit of waste ground between the bog and the windmill. Ivan’s handsome, kind face made him the sort of person you’d trust to look after your coffee while you duck into the loo. He was wearing a blue suit and muddy trainers. His tie had an eagle on it and some words in Russian. Judging by the tracks, he had dragged an office chair through the bog. I sat down.
